College History
Langston University (LU) is a regional, four-year diverse public institution located 12 miles east of Guthrie in Langston, Oklahoma. It is the only institution of higher education in the state of Oklahoma with a rural and an urban mission with University Centers in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. It is the only historically black college in the state but also the westernmost historically black college in the United States.

The school was founded in 1897 and was known as the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University. Langston University was created as a result of the second Morrill Act in 1890. Langston University is named for John Mercer Langston (1829–1897), civil rights pioneer, first African American member of Congress from Virginia. The school was renamed Langston University in 1941.

Langston offers more than 38 degree programs, including 5 masters degrees and one doctoral program. It offers associate, bachelors and master’s degrees that are delivered through its schools of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Behavioral Sciences, and Nursing and Health Professions. The university was the first university in the state accredited with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program in 2005.

The school is known as a leader in the field of agricultural research, and hosts the internationally recognized E (Kika) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research. Langston University is the definitive authority on urban trends and on finding solutions to issues faced by urban dwellers, particularly African Americans and other minorities. As a land-grant institution, it is committed to providing much-needed training, knowledge and support to farmers throughout America and in some foreign countries.

The nursing program at Langston University is ranked 2nd highest in the state and 29 among the top 100 in the nation according to College Atlas Our School of Nursing and Heath Professions offer the only undergraduate public heath program in the state.

The School of Arts and Sciences has numerous partnerships within the community and government that students may complete internships with and gain experience. Students and faculty of the school also have many accomplishments. Graduate of the school, Kellyn Pollard, took home first place at the K-INBRE symposium in 2014 for her melanoma research and the biotechnology program currently leads the world in manipulating the peanut plant hairs into full new plants without the use of seeds.

Langston University offers on-campus research laboratories that allow students to perform research projects and present abstracts at appropriate forums throughout Oklahoma and the United States. It offers a variety of study and research opportunities designed to spawn innovation, generate new technologies and ideas, and produce talented graduates prepared to compete in tomorrow’s global marketplace. Lonnie Easter, an in-demand performer and alumni, is the Director of Bands. Langston’s University Marching Pride Band is one of the most popular collegiate show bands in the country. It has received national recognition and is a source of pride for the university.

Dr. Kent Smith Jr., the second youngest college president in the country, has served as President of Langston University since 2012.

Langston University (LU) has been recognized as a top institution of higher education for affordability by four national publications. According to, LU was ranked number three in the nation among all the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in their list of the “25 most affordable bachelor’s-granting HBCUs.”

SmartAsset recently released the second annual Best Value Colleges study that featured the ‘Best Value Colleges’ in Oklahoma. Langston University was named in the top 10 in this ranking, receiving high marks for being a top performing school for its performance in categories including scholarships provided, starting salary, tuition, living costs, and retention rate. The Langston University School of Business was listed in College Choice’s “2016 list of most affordable undergraduate business schools.” The University was praised for its emphasis on the internship program, which helps train students to be work-ready after graduation. This list also highlighted the affordability of Langston’s online degree completion program for students with 60 credit hours. Learn more at

Langston also made headlines after being listed as DealCrunch’s #1 most affordable college town in the United States. After comparing the in-state tuition costs for universities and factoring in the average cost of living in the country, no other institution could compare to the affordability and high-quality education that Langston provides in addition to the “family feel.”
