Philadelphia-based restaurant delivery service Black and Mobile makes its Atlanta debut this week, delivering food exclusively from Black-owned restaurants to neighborhoods around the city.
Founded by 25-year-old Philadelphia native David Cabello in 2017 and launched last year, Black and Mobile aims to partner with and highlight Black-owned restaurants within the communities and cities in which it serves. Once Atlanta is up and running smoothly, Cabello and his twin brother Aaron plan to expand Black and Mobile to Los Angeles. The company’s Detroit operation launched earlier this year.
“I was going to college for business. After dropping out in 2016, I was delivering food for services like Postmates and Caviar. One day, I made $1,100 in about 30 hours delivering food on a bike and wondered how much money I could make if I owned my own company,” says Cabello of founding Black and Mobile. “I went home and researched how to start my own delivery business because what I really wanted to do was help Black-owned restaurants and businesses in my community.”
Black and Mobile is partnering with five Atlanta-area restaurants for this week’s launch, including Wadada, Tastebuddz ATL, D Cafe and Catering, Fin and Feathers, and Fireside Jamaican Restaurant. Cabello says he’s also in talks with fellow Philadelphia native Derrick Hayes of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks, and hopes to add other notable Atlanta restaurants to the service like Slutty Vegan and Bankhead Seafood. The company has already hired over 20 of the 120 planned driver positions in Atlanta, most living within communities in Black and Mobile delivery zones.
For now, Black and Mobile is only delivering from restaurants inside the Perimeter and within the city of Atlanta. Food is ordered using the company’s smartphone app. Like other delivery companies, Black and Mobile charges a service fee of 20 percent. Drivers can earn up to $20 an hour and keep 100 percent of their tips.
“I love the vibe in Atlanta. I’ve always wanted to expand to this city. I like how the Black community really thrives here, and there are so many Black-owned restaurants,” Cabello tells Eater of the Atlanta expansion. “We hire and deliver to everyone, but we just deliver food from Black-owned restaurants because those are the restaurants that are overlooked, underrepresented, and need our help. That’s our mission — the culture delivered.”
Black and Mobile continues to hire drivers (or “messengers”) in Atlanta, including people delivering food via bicycle. Those interested in applying are asked to fill out an application online. Atlanta restaurants interested in being added to the service can also register online. Restaurants utilize the delivery service using either a tablet device or smartphone.
