Things You Need To Know Before Trying To Grow Weed

With cannabis legalization set to come into effect on October 17, Canadians across the country are going to embrace the country’s new weed laws – including the right to grow a few plants at home. But before you dive into marijuana gardening, look over the 5 things you need to know before trying to grow marijuana, according to Danny Sloat and Kristin Murr-Sloat – the husband and wife team behind the artisinal cannabis grower AlpinStash.

1. Weed out wannabe pros when seeking advice

Finding accurate information is difficult as there are many “experts.”  Beware the forums and people who use the title “master grower” to describe their knowledge base. Instead, seek advice from professionals and experts in other, more established horticulture fields. If I have a plant question, I will often research how tomato farmers deal with whatever problem is at hand.  If advice or a nutrient doesn’t make sense or seems too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Find the growing style that suits you

Cannabis cultivation can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be.  From complex hydro systems and computer-controlled nutrient dosing systems, to plants grown in soil and watered by hand.  Find which style suits your lifestyle and values best, and go from there. Do what feels best and keeps you interested.

3. Experiment

The world of growing is vast, with many many different techniques and styles.  The best growers have played around with many different growing styles and nutrient systems and are better for it.  You learn more from your failures then your successes. Never stop learning and always stay humble.

4. Keep it clean

Keep your grow space clean and always clean your tools before and after use.  I can’t stress this point enough and it is the most common step that we see overlooked. In our opinion, this step is what separates the rock stars from the groupies.

5. Have fun!

Above all else, growing is fun and a source of joy.
