Boseman revisited his biggest movie, Black Panther, in two winning sketches. Boseman stepped back into fully costumed T’Challa mode for the return of “Black Jeopardy,” a recurring sketch on which Tom Hanks had a memorable mark last fall. As host of the game show, Kenan Thompson anchors the concept. It slyly contrasts the broad stereotypes of African-American characters with the African values espoused by T’Challa, whose Wakanda nation in this setting has an especially Disney-esque sparkle. “This is the reason why your cable bill is in your grand mamma’s name,” Thompson says, reading one quiz answer. Boseman-as-T’Challa responds, “What is, ‘To honor her as the foundation of the family?’” Thompson shakes his head. “That’s really nice,” he smiles. “It’s wrong. But that’s really nice.” After another, similarly straight-arrow answer, Thompson decides to give him points even though the answer does not match what’s on his card. “Y’all must have no mean streets in Wakanda,” he marvels.
NBC’s Saturday Night Live kept the ratings momentum going in its return from a spring break with a 4.5 Live+same day rating in the metered market households and a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating in the markets with local people meters for last night’s episode hosted by Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman and featuring musical guest Cardi B as well as Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump.
That was up a notch from the most recent SNL original before the hiatus three weeks ago hosted by Bill Hader (4.5, 1.9), which in turn was up from the season-low marks posted by the previous week’s show (4.1, 1.7).
In fact, these are the highest SNL deliveries in both measures since Feb. 3 (4.6, 2.0 with host Natalie Portman and musical guest Dua Lipa).
Saturday Night Live was the #1 show on the Big 4 networks Saturday in both metered-market households and 18-49 in the local people meters, topping in both measures all primetime programs on those nets, including ABC’s Thunder-Rockets NBA coverage.
